on the human cost of social theory
There’s a lot of discussion going on about social costs, consequences, predators in a community I’m peripherally involved in, rehabilitation, etc, and I’m not seeing much talk about there being multiple victims. It brings to mind this story from my grandfather.
A long time ago, my grandfather worked in the Pentagon. One of his jobs was to keep track of where all our nuclear missiles were pointed. Every so often there were strategic briefings.
One day, Grandpa was in one of these, and Werner von Braun, having pretty high clearance, and being able to attend any briefings he damn well pleased, had chosen to sit in on one of these.
There’s a bright and shiny new officer going down the targets, talking about after how this launch, x amount of Soviet capability will be disabled, y amount of infrastructure will be eliminated, etc.
The officer finishes up, asks if there are any questions. von Braun stands up and asks “Yes, Captain. How many people will be killed?”
